LED bike / trailer light

This project was to design and produce a bright LED light for our ALDI kids bike trailer, which has a 26mm shaft diameter. The trailer is used for evening walks or rides with our son. The light is designed to accommodate a 5w round heat sink (53mm x 22mm) that houses a 10w Cree XM-L LED on a 16mm base. A simple 10/60 degree plastic lens is attached to cover the opening, glued in place. In the image taken in our backyard, the light was tested at 3.1v and 1.5 amps, or about 50% of its maximum power potential. This LED setup produces an extremely bright beam of light and should not be looked into directly. Running the light at full capacity is not recommended unless the housing material has good heat resistance, such as ABS plastic. After 10 minutes of operation without airflow, the heat sink reached a temperature of 40 degrees Celsius at 50% power. However, when mounted on a moving object like a bike, airflow across the front section should be sufficient to keep the heat sink cool. If needed, a small fan can be attached to the back for added cooling. The light was printed out of PLA+ and assembled using super glue.
