Leconte de Lisle at The Jardin du Luxembourg, Paris
myminifactory
This larger-than-life marble sculpture brings to life Charles Marie René Leconte de Lisle (October 22, 1818 – July 17, 1894), a French poet renowned for his work in the Parnassian movement. Known by his surname alone, Leconte de Lisle was a key figure in the French Revolution of 1848, which saw the overthrow of King Louis-Philippe of France and the establishment of the Second Republic. However, he chose not to engage in politics after the republic was declared. As a writer, Leconte de Lisle is celebrated for his three collections of poetry: Poèmes antiques (1852), Poèmes barbares (1862), and Poèmes tragiques (1884). He also made significant contributions as a translator, rendering the works of Ancient Greek tragedians and poets such as Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and Horace into French. The sculpture was crafted by Denys Puech (1854-1942) in 1898. It depicts Leconte de Lisle accompanied by a muse or angel, serving as a monument to his legacy shortly after his death.
