Jean-Michel Folon, a renowned artist born in 1934, passed away in 2005. He excelled as a painter, draftsman, watercolorist, illustrator, graphic designer, and sculptor. Although he initially studied architecture, he soon abandoned it to focus on drawing. As a versatile creative, he produced short films and illustrated a book published by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Between 1969 and 1970, Folon held his inaugural exhibition in Tokyo, where he showcased this sculpture and a series of captivating watercolors. His artistic vision reflects the poignant sensitivity and isolation of contemporary life, subtly infused with humor. Many of his sculptures depict a lone figure situated in mundane or absurd environments, such as this sculpture's placement in a serene pond. Critics praise Folon's attention to everyday details, from birds and the moon to hell and erosion. His artwork invites viewers to appreciate the beauty in ordinary things.
