Le Hameau de la Reine Welcome to Le Hameau de la Reine, a prominent location favored by Queen Marie-Antoinette for her retreat in the Trianon domain, far from the Versailles Palace Court. In 1783, at the age of 27, the Queen commissions architect Richard Mique to build Le Hameau, a village situated around a lake, in the style of returning to nature, which was very popular at that time. This idyllic type of village is found in many European castle parks but the scale of Versailles gives it unique renown. Le Hameau consists of ten small factories, rustic houses inspired by architect Hubert Robert's design drawings. Some contain refined interior decorations while others are dedicated to real agricultural activities. After the Revolution, Le Hameau was renovated by Napoleon I in 1810. The Emperor gave it as a gift to his second wife, Marie-Louise of Austria, the granddaughter of Marie-Antoinette.
