Jean-Joseph Perraud's marble Le Désespoir was unveiled at the 1869 Salon after garnering universal acclaim for its plaster precursor at the 1861 Salon. The seated figure on the ground conforms to a long-standing convention, serving as an allegory for humanity's tragic condition. Unadorned and stripped of accessories, the sculpture affords viewers complete interpretive freedom. In contrast to its title, I believe this work exudes a sense of relaxation rather than despair; the subject appears leisurely and at ease. Unfortunately, my limited photography skills prevent me from capturing the full beauty of this piece. Currently, I can only present it in point cloud form, hoping that future advancements will allow for a more comprehensive reconstruction.
