After the evacuation from Dunkirk, it became clear that the only feasible way for Allies to fight in Europe was by landing on its beaches. Churchill's suggestion led to a concerted approach to designs for "Combined Operations" craft. British constructors met and drew up designs resulting in the production of the first "Tank Landing Craft" in November 1940. The LCT was produced in several configurations, with US versions being the Mark V and Mark VI. The Mark Vs had only a bow ramp while the Mark VIs had both bow and stern ramps. They were smaller than the Landing ship, Tank (or LST), which was capable of hauling and launching an LCT. They were unarmored and lightly armed. A large number were given through lend-lease to the UK and a small number to the USSR. Besides being used for transporting tanks, men or supplies, the LCT was suitable for conversion and modification. Several were converted into floating AA batteries during the invasion of Normandy in June 1944. Some LCTs received guns or rockets, while others became repair barges or minesweepers. Twenty-six had armor added, making them LCT(A), but this reduced their load. An LCT being loaded onto an LST by a crane barge showcases its capabilities. After WWII, the surviving US MK5s were sold off for scrap or civilian use while the MK6s were redesignated as Utility Landing Ship (LSU) in 1949 and again as Landing Craft Utility (LCU). Six of them were modified for Arctic service. Specifications include a displacement of 143 tons, length of 119 ft, beam of 32 ft, draft of 3 ft 7 in forward and 4 ft aft. The speed is 8 knots with armament consisting of two 20 mm guns. A complement of one officer and twelve enlisted personnel can be accommodated along with a capacity for four medium tanks or three x 50-ton tanks. Accommodations are also available for 150 short tons of cargo and eight troops. Three Gray 225 hp diesels power the craft with triple screws.
