I upgraded my Sega Game Gear with a new LCD screen, which was an amazing improvement over the original. However, I was frustrated by the significant gap between the new display and the Game Gear's shell. The original model had a thin rubber frame that filled this space, but the new LCD created a much larger gap. To address this issue, I designed a thicker replacement frame to try and close the gap. In comparison, my new design is shown on the right in the image above, while the original rubber frame is on the left. I intentionally avoided making square cuts on the right side of the new frame because those areas were holes for clips that held the old LCD in place. Fortunately, the new frame effectively closes the gap without coming into contact with the new LCD screen. In fact, a piece of paper can be easily slid between them, which is exactly what I aimed to achieve by designing this solution. I wanted to avoid applying any pressure on the LCD screen. Take a look at the before and after images above to decide for yourself whether you might need one of these custom frames.
