The Earth's crust is made up of 7-10 km thick rock that forms the surface, and beneath it lies the mantle, which extends down to about 2,900 km. The outer core is a liquid iron-nickel alloy with temperatures reaching as high as 5,500 degrees Celsius. This layer is surrounded by the inner core, a solid iron-nickel ball at the center of our planet.
