Layer Shift: Volume and Velocity Editions
thingiverse
I finally kept my promise to return, and here I am with two brand new versions. Upfront, I'll admit that the left arm isn't significantly smaller on either of them; if you struggled to fit the original Layer Shift Mk 2, sorry, but you'll still have a tough time with these (though it's possible, and mine fits after all...). The original Layer Shift was designed to deliver high-speed air in large volumes to the print area. However, the question remains: is air volume or air velocity more important? Step one in this remix involved using my slightly improved modeling knowledge to optimize airflow - smoothing out curves and delivering as close to 50% of available air to each side of the print, including a tighter "split" where air streams intersect. With that accomplished, the "volume" edition delivers almost the same cross-sectional area at both outlets, while the "velocity" edition reduces the outlet's cx area by one-third compared to "volume". I'm still unsure which (if any) is better...I thought you kind people might like to help me figure it out? If there are no issues with "velocity," this will inform future developments that do include reducing the big left arm. I can print these reasonably well on their backs without any supports; in that position, the printer's bridging effort is minimal; I get some "looping," but it only affects aesthetics, not performance. Note: at time of writing, I've successfully printed the "Volume" edition, but the "Velocity" version is still waiting to be printed - proceed with caution!
