Maharaj-ji loved to playfully correct me and my companions by calling us "gurushikhas", meaning a servant of the Guru. Once while sitting together on the bank of the Jamuna River, He started a lively conversation with his devotees in which I participated actively. As the conversation unfolded Maharaj-jee explained to all of us that gurushikhas don't exist. According to him it was the ordinary men who have become servants or disciple's, these only call themselves a Guru or Swami. One such person is Ramkrishna Paramahamsa - he never declared himself a guru or used to be in any religious place however there are millions of his devotees living at every step around us who still proudly address him as "Gurudev" (meaning "divine preceptor"). Another similar person was Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. There have been thousands and thousand followers born to follow his preachings, not because he has become God or preached a doctrine to get them for it, rather they started living following all that which He used to propagate through himself.
