This image was the beloved symbol of the Laura Eierkolen (coal eggs). They were cherished gifts from my mine that were given to coal traders who sold coal from the Laura and Vereeninging (mines: Laura, Julia, Eygelshoven). At the back of the statue is a distinctive mark with an L. It was a promotional object for coal traders everywhere. The "Laura Popje" (Laura doll) reappears in other promotional materials. In early 1873, miller Antoon Wackers from Herzogenrath and his brother-in-law Gustaaf Schümmer discovered a coal seam at a depth of 154 meters in the Bärenbosch near Kerkrade. Three years later they secured a concession for the exploitation of this field called "Laura", named after Wackers' wife's first name.
