Launch Complex 34 Flame Deflector (BR2293)
sketchfab
Two massive flame deflectors made of a sturdy steel frame, shielded by 1” thick steel plates and wrapped in a 4” layer of heat-resistant ceramic, were at the ready for Launch Complex 34. One deflector played its part in the launch, while the other stood prepared to take over in case something went wrong or additional support was needed. Weighing in at over 150 tons and measuring an impressive 43 feet in length, 32 feet wide, and 21 feet high, these behemoths were carefully maneuvered into position using a rail system. Their job was to protect the vehicle and launch pedestal by expertly directing engine flames away from their path. The unique inverted "V" shape of these deflectors, combined with their robust welded and bolted steel design, made them an engineering marvel. Today, Launch Complex 34 serves as a poignant reminder of the tragic Apollo 1 incident that took place there, and these flame deflectors stand sentinel on the pad as a lasting tribute to that fateful event.
