Budai, also known as Hotei or Pu-Tai in Chinese culture, is a semi-historical figure and revered deity within Zen Buddhism's pantheon of notable monks and deities. Legend has it that he lived around the 10th century during China's Wuyue kingdom's golden era. His name, which translates to Cloth Sack, originates from his iconic portrayal as a wandering monk carrying an immense bag. Budai's jolly demeanor, witty personality, and unorthodox lifestyle set him apart from other revered Buddhist masters. He is often depicted with an enchanting smile or joyful laughter, earning the Chinese nickname "Laushing Buddha" (Chinese: , Pinyin: Xiáo Fó). The primary historical reference supporting Budai's existence lies in the collection of biographies for Zen monks called Ching te chuan teng lu, also known as The Transmission of the Lamp. He emphasized living fully in the present and enjoying the journey, often quoting: "Appreciate the route to the same degree that you enjoy when reaching the destination." The smiling face of Budai's statue is a constant companion and serves as an ideal friend who steers people back to reality and boosts positivity whenever they wander off course. According to some legends, when asked if he held grudges against others, Budai jokingly responded, "Believe me; my jokes are on all." In a light-hearted exchange with his supposed descendants, Budai was quoted saying: "You still haven't moved on? Plans foiled and an expensive funeral suit to show for it. Please keep in touch when the time comes."
