Six remarkably well-preserved pottery kilns have been investigated by Oxford Archaeology on behalf of Urban and Civic Plc in Nottinghamshire as part of the Newark South development. One kiln stands out for featuring several kiln bars that would have supported vessels above the fuel source during firing. The kiln bars were reportedly arranged radially, with a plinth at the center and niches formed in the kiln wall around the edge, all preserved in this example. The archway represents the flu entrance, and a large rake-out pit is located in front of it. Samples taken from the kiln wall will likely be used to securely date its use through archaeomagnetic techniques.
