Ohio Valley Archaeology, Inc. uncovered this Late Archaic basin feature while conducting excavations at the Schoenbrunn Village Site in New Philadelphia, Ohio. Beneath a thick layer of Fire Cracked Rock (FCR), archaeologists discovered relatively clean feature fill with minimal silt and dirt. Scattered throughout the FCR layer were several artifacts, primarily projectile points and net sinkers. This type of basin feature was likely widespread in Ohio, but its presence is now scarce due to agricultural practices that have erased many of these ancient sites. Careful inspection reveals telltale signs of plowing across the FCR, a testament to the site's history of human activity.
