Students Will Design Devices To Keep Strangers From Entering The House Of The Three Bears. After Reading Goldilocks And The Three Bears, Your Students Will Have The Task To Design A Device To Keep Strangers From Entering The House Of The Three Bears. The Device May Be Made Fully Printed, Partially Printed Or Of Found Objects. Objectives: Through This Lesson, Students Will Learn Which Designs Are Able To Keep The Door Closed And Which Will Keep Intruders Out. Students Will Also Have To Think Through The Practicality Of Their Design As The Bears Will Have To Use It On A Daily Basis. This Lesson Could Be Used In 2nd-3rd Grade, Depending On Student’s Ability With The 3d Modeling Software. Allowing Students To Build Parts Of The Device On The Printer And Parts Using Found Objects, Allows This To Be Accessible To Students Of Multiple Skill Levels. Subjects: Literacy Extension, STEM, Writing Skills Learned (Standards): Grade 2: - Ask Questions, Make Observations, And Gather Information About A Situation People Want To Change To Define A Simple Problem That Can Be Solved Through The Development Of A New Or Improved Object Or Tool. - Develop A Simple Sketch, Drawing, Or Physical Model To Illustrate How The Shape Of An Object Helps It Function As Needed To Solve A Given Problem. - Analyze Data From Tests Of Two Objects Designed To Solve The Same Problem To Compare The Strengths And Weaknesses Of How Each Performs. Grade 3: - Define A Simple Problem That Can Be Solved Through The Development Of A New Or Improved Object Or Tool. - Generate And Compare Multiple Possible Solutions To A Problem Based On How Well Each Is Likely To Meet The Criteria And Constraints Of The Problem. - Plan And Carry Out Fair Tests In Which Variables Are Controlled And Failure Points Are Considered To Identify Aspects Of A Model Or Prototype That Can Be Improved. Lesson Plan And Activity: Read And Discuss The Book Goldilocks And The Three Bears. Talk About Goldilocks. What Happened To Make Her Go In The House? What Could Have Stopped Her? Should She Have Gone In? What Could The Bears Do To Help Keep The Items In Their House Safe From Intruders? Is There A Way You Can See To Help Them? For Students Who Need A Little Extra Nudge: Show Students Pictures Of Door Stops, Locks And Ways To Make Your Own Device. Testing Designs: Give Students Time To Set Up Their Device. Then Test It By Flipping The Cabinet Door Side Down And Add The Weights Inside. **See Picture Of Cabinet Door. Sides Of Cabinet Are Off For Picture Purposes. Back Of Cabinet Should Be Taken Off And Then Cabinet Should Be Placed Door Down On Top Of A Chair Or Between Two Tables (Whichever Will Hold It Securely But Allow The Door To Still Open.) Then To Test, Weights Should Be Placed On The Inside Of The Door - Where The Fox Pacifier Is Currently. Add Weights One By One To See How Much Pressure The Device Students Created Can Hold. After All Devices Are Tested, Have A Discussion: -Place Successful Devices Together. Do They Have Anything In Common? Is There Something That All Successful Designers Did? Have Students Write About Their Experience And How Successful Their Design Was. Is There Something You Wish You Would Have Done Differently? Is There Something You Would Like To Change On Your Design But Couldn’t Figure Out How To Make It Work? Duration Of Lesson: 1-2 Weeks: Allow One Day For Story And Discussion, A Full Week For Designing, Plan On Testing 2-3 Devices A Day (Since You Will Have To Include Set Up And Take Down Unless You Have More Than One Cabinet), And Make Sure You Have A Full Day To Revisit Designs And Debrief. Preparation: Depending On Which Manner The Students Want To Use To Construct The Design, Students May Need Access To: Ipad, Computer, Printer, Found Objects, Glue, Etc. I Would Recommend Tinkercad For This Design, However If Your Students Are More Comfortable In Another Design Environment That Works Too. Rubric And Assessment: See Attached Photo Handouts & Assets: -Show Goldilocks Being Read Https://Youtu.Be/Bvgyryq3Lig -Extension: Can You Make A Device That Works On A Door Or A Drawer? -Extension: Is There A Physical Aspect Of Your Device That You Can Change To Make It Resist More Force Or Be More Practical For Everyday Use?
