LaserCut Spool Holder

LaserCut Spool Holder

To create a spool holder, I initially designed one in Rhino but found it unsuitable for Velleman spools purchased from Microcenter, the first national chain to sell filament. After remaking it, the revised design can accommodate spools less than 8.5" in diameter and 3.75" wide with an inside spool diameter of at least 1". I locked the feet of the spool into a base plate, which was secured by a pressure fit. The Baltimore Hackerspace's laser cutter helped create the holder from a .20 thick oak plywood piece imported in RedLaser software. Although it's snug, applying pressure helps it snap together. To ease assembly, I trimmed inside corner holes with a razor. After applying wood glue and clamping for 30 minutes, I added a 6" piece of 1" schedule 40 pipe, rounded its edge for easier insertion/removal using a port-a-band saw and grinding wheel.
