A test piece and support mechanism for laser origami, inspired by Stefanie Mueller et al.'s paper "Laser Origami: Laser Cutting 3D Objects" (http://www.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/baudisch/projects/laserorigami.html), were used with a 60W Trotec laser for 2mm acrylic. The settings included: first stage (Black/Cut) at 100% power, 1% speed, and 2 passes, air assist on; second stage (Blue/Bend) at 100% power, 20% speed, and 30 passes, air assist off; third stage (Green/Final cut) at 100% power, 1% speed, and 1 pass, air assist on. The support structure was designed for 3mm MDF, was press-fit and reconfigurable, but the bottom layer wore quickly due to defocused laser hits and heat. To avoid flaring up or absorbing excess heat, it was advised to use a protective layer during multiple uses, while exercising extreme caution throughout the process.
