Laser Mount for Printrbot Simple Metal
thingiverse
I purchased a laser mount for my 2.5W Blue Laser on banggood.com for under $100. This affordable setup attaches the laser alongside my extruder using existing screws without any modifications needed for my Printrbot. You can view a video of the laser in action at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1ZuSHSmTE4 Print Settings Rafts: No rafts are used. Supports: Supports are also not used. Resolution: The resolution is set to .3 mm. Infill: Infill density is 100%. Post-Printing Instructions Using the Laser Mount the laser with M3x8mm screws. My continuous-running laser doesn't allow for on/off control, but that wasn't an issue in this setup. Custom Cura Settings For engraving, I set up a Cura profile that omits Z homing and temperature settings for both the extruder and bed, disabling retraction as well. Non-print moves run at top speed, while printing moves go as fast as needed to achieve desired depth. I'm showcasing a piece printed from thing#1057499 courtesy of SMooreArtDesign; I inverted the object so the top layer was on bottom during engraving. Engraving Settings With print speed set at 5mm/s, the laser was unplugged right when it finished its final pass to avoid any unwanted scorch marks. Safety Reminders Remember, always use protective eyewear with high-powered lasers like this one - prolonged exposure can lead to permanent blindness.
