I built my own laser engraver from scratch, and the good news is that you can print all the components using PLA. I opted for a 15W laser diode powered by 12VDC, coupled with a CNC shield on an Arduino Uno board, GRBL for the laser control, and GRBLlaser software for maximum precision.
