Laser Cut Phone Stand
thingiverse
This is a project I embarked on to create business cards that would make an impression on potential employers, since I'm a student. I wanted something unique and eye-catching that wouldn't be thrown away immediately. After some thought, I realized how often I lean my phone against a book or object to keep it upright and thought this could be made better and scaled up. I discovered living hinges for phone stands and gave them a try but soon saw they weren't practical at credit card size. After further consideration, I found that using a pencil - something almost everyone has on their desk - can give a flat piece of wood depth and prop up a phone effectively. I have several Ikea pencils, which are about half the length of normal pencils or just wider than most smartphones. I designed this stand with these pencils in mind and was pleased to find it's incredibly effective. However, the Ikea pencils used happen to be slightly smaller than all other pencils I can find, making the hole an odd size. The DWG files attached are from Autocad, and the CDR is CorelDraw. I've tried laser cutting into 3mm ply and 3mm perspex (clear acrylic) and both work very well. The drawings each have two stands together for cutting - both sides of the stand. I hope you all have as much fun making these as I did!
