Lartigue Lever for Graflex Super D (~1/50 sec on 1/8" aperture)- Distorted Wheels at Safe Speeds!

Ever since the the Met showed Jacques-Henri Lartigue's private catalog of images in the 60's, people have been in awe of his 1913 image of a speeding car with distorted wheels and swept-back spectators. It's an effect of him panning the camera to follow the car, and the horizontal slit on the focal-plane shutter on his ICA Reflex camera. Recreating this in modern times is a challenge, many cameras with focal plane shutters (35mm and medium format) have vertical slits on their shutters. Graflex SLRs are a natural fit for this with their large horizontal 4x5 focal plane shutters and narrow 1/8" apertures available, but the problem is that that aperture is only available at ~1/500 - 1/800 seconds, which is too fast for a vehicle to travel much distance.

What I've created is a device that allows use of the narrowest 1/8" slit on a Graflex Super D to be used at much slower speeds (~1/50 second) so the “Lartigue Effect” can be maximized. It has two parts, the “Lartigue Lever” that attaches to the bipost flash sync port, and the “Lartigue Cylinder” that slips over the aperture selector knob. The lever applies extra friction to the cylinder and slows the movement of the aperture curtain of the shutter. It requires no permanent modifications to the camera and takes a mere 5 seconds to slip into place. I provided two lever designs so you can select an amount of friction that's right for your camera.

More on the technicals of the effect are explained in this fantastic LFPF post (and Matlab simulation).

https://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?31903-Jacques-Henri-Lartigue-and-his-camera

More on the image and Jacques-Henri Lartigue:

https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/283256
