Large & Small LED Lamps

These two LED lamps employ identical fundamental geometry, yet exhibit distinct variations. Initially, I designed the larger one and had to make compromises with its geometry due to difficulties in integrating the hemispherical top with the twisted slabs forming the side columns. Consequently, I made the lamp large enough to minimize the noticeable discrepancies. Upon commencing the print, I discovered a straightforward method that significantly reduced the mismatch between the top and the columns. Therefore, I applied this approach for the smaller lamp, resulting in a more complex polygonal rail sweep shape instead of a simple hemisphere. The underlying geometry was inspired by a post on the Rhino3d Grasshopper forum where someone inquired about creating buildings with twisted slab sides. A respondent provided a method for designing twisted slabs, which I adapted to suit these designs. This blog page explains how I incorporate architectural design principles into my 3D printing endeavors: http://birkbinnard.com/blog/from-architecture-to-3d-printing/. The large lamp is quite substantial – it printed in 48 1/2 hours using standard print parameters of 100 mm/sec and 0.200 mm layer height. If you have a printer capable of producing such large designs, I recommend starting with a full reel of filament to ensure uninterrupted printing. In contrast, the smaller lamp is much more compact – it printed in 12 1/2 hours under the same print settings. Both lamps can accommodate either battery-operated or wall-powered "puck" LED lights. For instructions on how to assemble and power these LED lights using a wall connection, refer to this blog page: http://birkbinnard.com/blog/wall-powered-led-lights/. Alternatively, you can find battery-powered puck lights at large home improvement stores or by searching online for "LED puck light".
