Lantern of the dead,12th century

Lanterns of the dead, a term we know as "lanterne des morts" in French, hold a rich history that dates back to ancient times. Constructed primarily during the Middle Ages, specifically in the XII century, some of these structures have been standing for over a millennium. Unfortunately, only a handful remain today, which is why I felt compelled to document them. These lanterns are predominantly found in France and are deeply rooted in local tradition. They were designed to guide the deceased towards the light, reflecting the Christian perspective on death as a journey through darkness. However, renowned French architect Viollet-le-Duc viewed them as an expression of Celtic heritage. Despite much still being unknown about these structures, one thing is certain: they have served as powerful symbols for generations.
