Today, the term lantern refers to various types of portable lighting devices that originated as protective enclosures for light sources, typically candles, making it simpler to transport and hang them safely in drafty areas such as passageways and staircases where unshielded candles were more likely to be extinguished by strong air currents - not only from wind but also from the gentle movement of opening a door.
