An update: a version of landing gear is now available that can be strengthened by using a zip tie, with a cutout for easy insertion. I designed and printed these gears for my QAV400 using my MakerBot Replicator 2, and they exceeded my expectations. They may also work for QAV500 models, though confirmation would be helpful.
