The Landing Ship Support, Large — previously known as the Landing Craft, Support (Large) — class of amphibious warfare ships played a crucial role in World War II Pacific operations for the United States Navy. Their primary function was to provide close support to landing forces on beaches. In addition to this critical task, they also took on radar picket duty and fire fighting responsibilities. These versatile vessels earned the nickname "Mighty Midgets" due to their impressive capabilities. Initially designated as LCS(L)(3) — an abbreviation for Landing Craft Support (Large) Mark 3 — the class underwent a reclassification in 1949, emerging as "Landing Ship Support, Large" or LSSL.
