Lamborghini, an Italian luxury sports car and SUV manufacturer based in Sant'Agata Bolognese, was founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini in 1963 to compete with established marques like Ferrari. The company gained fame for the Miura sports coupé in 1966, which set rear mid-engine, rear wheel drive as a standard layout for high-performance cars. However, sales plunged after the 1973 financial downturn and oil crisis; the firm changed ownership thrice, including bankruptcy in 1978. Chrysler Corporation took control in 1987 and sold it to Malaysian and Indonesian groups in 1994. In 1998, Volkswagen Group acquired Lamborghini, placing it under Audi division's control. New product lines were introduced, leading to increased productivity until the financial crisis in late 2000s caused a 50% drop in sales.
