Suisse, Fribourg, Domdidier A limestone statue discovered in three pieces at Domdidier (canton of Fribourg, Switzerland) in 1886. Exposed in a regional property, it was transported to the city of Fribourg into a private garden, before being donated to the Museum of Art and History. In 1971, it was transferred to the cantonal archaeological service to be cleaned of mosses and lichens covering it. A first stylistic study considered the statue as that of a Roman era goddess-mother. The proposed dating seemed confirmed by the discovery of ancient vestiges near the site where the statue was found. This hypothesis has been refuted by a recent study: the composition does not correspond to the usual representations of goddess-mothers. Some elements (notably the hairstyle) correspond rather to an aesthetic in vogue between the second half of the 17th century and the beginning of the 19th century. SAEF
