Laennec's stethoscope
sketchfab
The stethoscope was invented by René Laennec, a French doctor, around 1820. In 1816, Dr. Laennec listened to a young woman's heart through a tube made from rolled-up paper because he wanted to avoid the awkwardness and impropriety of placing his ear on her chest. He called this early invention the stethoscope, which comes from the Greek word for chest, stethos. The doctor then created wooden versions similar to this early example. The famous binaural stethoscope became widely used in the 1840s.
