Lady’s shoe, Bar Hill, Antonine Wall
sketchfab
A lady's leather shoe (calceus, type A) unearthed at Bar Hill measures 23cm in length and was discovered within a refuse pit/ditch. It is likely that this shoe belonged to the wife of a commanding officer who resided within the fort, as it was customary for these women to live alongside their husbands. The Antonine Wall extends across Scotland from the Clyde to the Forth River. Constructed around 142 AD and occupied for only two decades, remnants of its ramparts, steep ditches, forts, and bathhouses remain visible today. Since 2008, it has been recognized as part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site. Additional information on this site is available at www.antoninewall.org.
