This sculpture was crafted by Pierre-Jules Cavelier (Paris, born on August 30, 1814 – died in 1894 Paris) - a renowned French academic sculptor. As the son of a skilled silversmith and furniture maker, Cavelier spent his early years in Paris where he developed a strong foundation for his future career. He was fortunate to have studied under two prominent artists: David d'Angers, a master sculptor, and Paul Delaroche, an accomplished painter. In 1842, Cavelier's remarkable talent earned him the prestigious Prix de Rome with his outstanding plaster statue of Diomedes Entering the Palladium. Following this achievement, he resided at the Villa Medici from 1843 to 1874 where he refined his skills and made significant contributions to the art world. In 1864, Cavelier was appointed as a Professor at the École des beaux-arts, a prestigious institution that played a pivotal role in shaping the artistic careers of many notable artists, including Édouard Lantéri, Hippolyte Lefèbvre, Louis-Ernest Barrias, Eugène Guillaume, Alfred Gilbert from Britain, and George Grey Barnard from America. Under Cavelier's guidance, these talented individuals honed their skills and went on to achieve great success in the art world. This object is part of a groundbreaking initiative called "Scan The World".
