La Punxa, Girona

The House of the Spike, known popularly as such due to its most prominent feature - a tower with a glazed ceramic roof - was initially designed as a rental apartment block that formed part of a complex of warehouses and dependencies for the Teixidor Flour Mill. This modernist tower with a glazed ceramic roof is a reminiscence of the style that has since been surpassed in the rest of the construction, which is characterized by avant-garde formal simplification in the treatment of the facade. The ground floor and warehouse complex was built following the original project, while Masó introduced changes to his project for the remainder of the building, retaining however its overall conception. Purchase by the College of Carpenters in 1979 led to the restoration of the deteriorated building under the new program; facades and stairs were recreated in a literal and meticulous manner, but the structural organization was radically modified and a new front was planned for the south. The warehouse complex designed by Masó was demolished. CRONOLOGIA Project dated Rafael Masó in 1918. Construction completed in 1922. Purchased in 1979 by the College of Carpenters and Technical Architects, it was remodeled in 1981 by Tarrús-Bosch-Vives.
