La Providence at the Louvre, Paris, France

The statue had been sitting quietly in the Louvre's Antiques section since the museum first opened its doors, but it wasn't until after the First Empire that it was finally put on display under a new name: 'Providence'. By placing a globe firmly in his left hand, the modern restorer cleverly transformed the sculpture into Urania, the muse of astronomy. The nose, mouth, neck, arms and feet were all given a fresh makeover, courtesy of some recent modifications to the original work.
