La Méditerranée
myminifactory
Several years after the sculptor Aristide Maillol's passing in 1944, his muse and model Dina Vierny made a generous donation to France of the artist's works, aiming to introduce him to the general public. La Méditerranée is a stunning bronze sculpture created in 1905. It depicts a seated woman, her left knee lifted, her elbow resting on this knee, and her head nestled in her left hand. The sculpture leans against her right arm, while her extended right leg passes under her left leg. Since its installation in 1964, the sculpture has proudly stood in the garden of the Carrousel in the Tuileries, located in Paris's first arrondissement. It is part of a beautiful ensemble of Maillol's statues displayed outdoors. Aristide Maillol met his untimely demise on September 27, 1944, in Banyuls-sur-Mer, where he had spent most of his life. In the garden of the museum dedicated to him, a poignant statue of a woman representing the Mediterranean adorns his final resting place.
