The Maternity is a urban sculpture by Fernando Botero located in the Plaza Escandalera, in the city of Oviedo, Principado de Asturias, Spain. Also known as "the fat woman". The urban landscape of this city is adorned with sculptural works, generally commemorative monuments dedicated to key figures at first, and more purely artistic since the late 20th century. The sculpture is made of bronze and dated 1989, despite being installed in 1996. The work presents a seated woman with a child on one of her thighs. The figure, measuring almost two and a half meters, and weighing 800 kilograms, has a dark gray color and leaves exposed the rounded and obese forms characteristic of the Colombian sculptor, author of the same.
