La Loire et le Loiret

This sculpture by Corneille Van Cleve, created between 1645 and 1732, is titled "La Loire et Le Loiret". Many French sculptures feature representations of significant rivers, and this work honors two prominent ones: the Loire and the Loiret. The piece portrays a man (the Loiret) and a woman (the Loire) sitting together, with the woman facing forward while her back is to the man's side. She holds an overturned jug that spills water into the surrounding area. In contrast, the bearded male figure reads from a scroll on his left-hand side. A cherub or young child sits in front of the female figure, while another child carries two fish behind the male figure.
