Cenotes and Caves Project of Quintana Roo, Mexico / 2017 Project Arqueológico de Cenotes y Cuevas de Quintana Roo, Mexico. Model by Octavio del Río - ArqSubMx Description: Interior view of the section at the bottom of the cave called "La Chimenea," where there is archaeological and paleontological evidence of human occupation at the end of the Ice Age. Inside the system of caves and cenotes Taxma Ha, the chamber known as "La Chimenea" is located, where charcoal associated with fragments of bones from a Hemiauchenia macrocephala camelid species was found that inhabited the area at the end of the Pleistocene era. Some of these bones are fractured, partially burned, and display cuts made by some lithic instrument. This evidence suggests that humans occupied this chamber more than 12,000 years ago, at the end of the Ice Age, when the cave was still dry, and where they cooked and fed on this now-extinct animal.
