The SA80, initially designated as XL65, was developed by the British state-owned Enfield Small Arms Factory for a small-caliber, high velocity round. It underwent several changes, including rechambering for the 4.85mm and later the NATO-standard 5.56mm cartridge. The original SA80 weapons were plagued with issues, leading to an upgrade program by Heckler & Koch that resulted in the L85A2 configuration. While initial field reports from Afghanistan were unsatisfactory due to improper care and maintenance, the L85A2 is currently recognized as a reliable and accurate weapon when using SUSAT telescope sights. The bullpup rifle features a stamped sheet steel receiver, short-stroke gas piston, three-position gas regulator, and NATO-standard magazines with 30-round capacity. It also comes equipped with a 4X SUSAT telescope sight or an alternative diopter rear sight system and can be fitted with a proprietary knife bayonet or 40mm under-barrel grenade launcher.
