It was the left hand of a soldier who suffered a gunshot wound, a fate that befell many men on both sides of the conflict. Now, this specimen is safely stored in the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring, Maryland, courtesy of Surgeon John E. Summers. The meticulous work of Dr. Summers has ensured that every detail of this hand remains intact for posterity.
