The KV-2 was a Soviet heavy assault tank used during the initial phase of the Great Patriotic War. Its abbreviation, HF, stands for "Kliment Voroshilov," after whom the series of Soviet heavy tanks released between 1939 and 1943 were named. A prominent figure in the Russian Civil War, Kliment Voroshilov was also a military and political leader. Initially known as the "HF with a big tower," this tank was developed by Leningrad Kirov Plant's design bureau in January 1940 to address the urgent need of the Red Army for a well-protected vehicle armed with potent weapons to combat the fortifications of the Mannerheim Line during the Soviet-Finnish War (1939-1940).
