The KV-2 heavy tank originated in Leningrad back in 1940, and its production got underway at the Kirov Plant that same year. The main goal of this massive tank was to break through enemy defenses by blasting pillboxes and bunkers with direct firepower. For this purpose, the turret mounted a powerful M-10T 152.4 mm tank howitzer model 1938/40. Initial KV-2 tanks came equipped with what was known as a "large turret," while later models boasted a smaller "low" turret that weighed less. The KV-2 saw action in early battles of the Great Patriotic War, and a total of 204 of these massive tanks were produced at the Leningrad Kirov Plant from February 1940 to June 1941.
