Kuzman Josifovski Pitu, a Macedonian communist partisan who earned the title of People's Hero of Yugoslavia, was born on June 23, 1915, in Prilep. He studied law at Belgrade's Faculty of Law from 1935 and joined the Communist Party of Yugoslavia in 1938. Two years later, Pitu returned to his hometown and became a key member of the local committee for the party in Macedonia. When Axis forces occupied Yugoslavia in 1941, Pitu was sent to Western Macedonia, where Albanian and Italian troops were in control. He attended crucial conferences to organize an antifascist resistance movement in the area. In early 1943, Pitu joined the main headquarters of the People's Liberation Army and Partisan units in Macedonia. Tragically, on February 25, 1944, while attending a secret meeting for the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Workers' Party in Skopje, Pitu was discovered by Bulgarian police. During a frantic chase, he was shot dead. Today, Pitu's birthplace and residence are remembered as a memorial museum dedicated to his legacy. His image is immortalized through numerous busts in several cities across the Republic of Macedonia. Furthermore, many schools and streets bear his name, honoring his commitment to the people's liberation struggle.
