The original part's mass was 2111.647 grams, but after redesigning in Inventor 2014 and rendering in Showcase 2014/Keyshot, the mass of The Kraken V5 is only 385.655 grams - a decrease of 81.74%. The new part fits within the original part's envelope and maintains over .05" wall thickness. FEA tests show stress levels ranging from 71.24 max ksi in torsion to 116.1 max ksi at 8000 up. Removing mass in certain areas actually helped spread the stress, resulting in a lower overall max ksi compared to V4 design. However, due to FEA requirements, the design had to be kept simple, ruling out lattice and support beams. The Kraken V5 was 3D printed by Eduardo Schoenknecht. Overall, this challenge was an awesome learning experience, and it was great to work with other GrabCad members. Cheers!
