Spearpoint of Kovel Unveiled The apex of a javelin discovered in 1858 Suszyczno, a town thirty kilometers west of Kovel, Ukraine, is an early third-century artifact. This spearhead measures 15.5 cm in length with a maximum width of 3.0 cm. Its leaf was embellished on both sides with intricate silver patterns that read from right to left as 'tilarids,' interpreted by scholars as 'thither rider' or more plausibly, Ziel-Reiter ('target rider'), possibly signifying either the spear's owner or a warrior, as suggested by Johannes Hoops in his esteemed work 'Reallexikon der germanischen Altertumskunde', volume seventeen. Identified as East Germanic (Gothic) due to its nominative -s ending, differing from Proto-Norse -z endings, this inscription bears closer resemblance to the Latin alphabet than to the classic Elder Futhark.
