Greek artisans carved this ancient marble figure in Attica, one of their earliest human depictions. The rigid stance with the left leg forward and arms by its side owes a debt to Egyptian artistry. Greek sculptors relied on this pose throughout the sixth century B.C., a clear and simple formula they employed again and again. Geometric forms dominate this early figure, almost abstract in nature; anatomical details are rendered in beautiful patterns that mirror each other. This statue marked the final resting place of a young Athenian aristocrat.
