Kostya Full Body Scan
thingiverse
My latest project involves a full body scan using an upgraded scanning turntable. After spending a week fine-tuning my Heavy Duty Lazy Susan for Full Body Scanning (available at http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:28454), I added a rotisserie motor to power it, resulting in improved scan quality due to its slow and consistent rotation. Inspiration for the upgrade came from testing Lenovo's new Yoga 13 computer as a portable scanning station using ReconstructMe software. Although it didn't work under Windows 8, I managed to successfully scan the laptop itself. To create a scan with my upgraded turntable, I started at the bottom and slowly moved the Kinect up the body for clean geometry. Post-processing in Netfabb took only a few minutes before the model was ready for printing. Check out the print in action at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jdgzm2R-p_k. Stay tuned for more full body scans in the near future! As for improvements, I discovered that the chin area required special attention to avoid a "zombie face" effect. Printing without support and using a pencil as temporary support for the chin layer proved successful. Next time, I'll advise subjects to keep their chins up during scanning.
