I whipped up a simple little clip-on gadget to attach basic springs that I frequently pick up at the hardware store where I work because I consistently forget what kind of springs to grab. They're approximately 4mm in diameter by 18mm long or 5/32 x 15/16 when purchased in a handy pack from Menards for $1.19, part number 88202. These springs are designed specifically for diagonal rods with a 5mm diameter and snap onto the rod securely without sliding around.
