
Koshkonong Bold v Fine Lip

Koshkonong Bold variety Fine Lip Top shoulder features distinctive vertical finger trails on the longer walls (Boszhardt 1994: 232). Lip decoration includes relatively fine notching, usually applied with a tool, on top of the lip along the entire rim. Notches may be oriented perpendicular to the rim or obliquely to the right or left (233). This artifact belongs to the Oneota culture and was found in La Crosse Locality. It dates back to the Late Prehistoric Period, specifically during the Valley View Phase, which occurred between A.D. 1450-1625. The artifact originates from the Sanford Archaeological District, site 47LC394-12, feature 106 B. Artifact ID is 91.1838 and it's curated at the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Boszhardt, Robert F., wrote about this artifact in "Oneota Group Continuity at La Crosse: The Brice Prairie, Pammel Creek, and Valley View Phases," published in The Wisconsin Archaeologist 75(3-4): 173-236 in 1994.
