Eudald Serra i Güell (1911-2002), a visionary sculptor and ethnologist, left an indelible mark on the art world. As a prominent surrealist sculptor, he was part of the post-war Catalan artistic avantgarde as a member of ADLAN (Friends of New Art). His educational background at Llotja Arts and Crafts School in Barcelona, where he studied under the guidance of Àngel Ferrant, laid the foundation for his future success. In 1935, Serra embarked on a journey to Japan, where he collaborated with renowned ceramicist Hamada Shoji. This experience earned him numerous accolades through various exhibitions. Serra's fascination with cultures was sparked during his trip to Hokkaido Island in 1947, where he served as an artist-in-residence for the United States army. As a result, he began modeling busts of the indigenous people, which he defined as artistic anthropology. This pursuit became a constant theme throughout his travels. Upon returning to Barcelona in 1949, Serra met August Panyella and Albert Folch, with whom he formed a lasting friendship. Throughout his career, Serra collaborated with ceramist Llorenç Artigas and was part of the Altamira School avant-garde group. He won the prestigious Prize for Sculpture at the 1st Hispano-American Biennial of Art in 1952. His work can be found in various public spaces across Barcelona, as well as in numerous museums, including the façade of the Ethnological Museum of Barcelona building. As a dedicated educator, Serra taught before assuming the role of conservator for Albert Folch's collections. He continued to collaborate with Panyella and Folch on expeditions, acquiring objects for the museum's holdings funded by Barcelona City Council. His approach to collecting was driven by artistic experience rather than strict anthropology or ethnography. Serra published several works, including some in collaboration with Folch. Following Albert Folch's passing, he was appointed director of the Folch Foundation, cementing his legacy as a pioneering figure in the art world.
